Master's in Publishing at the University of the Arts London

Our graduates are welcomed by the international publishing industry, across both print and digital media. Past exit destination surveys indicate that about 90 per cent are absorbed into the industry within six months of completing the course. Our graduates are excellently equipped for project leader roles, which requires a critical understanding of more than one publishing function, and advanced knowledge of management processes and leadership. Accordingly, the MA Publishing course at LCC gives our graduates a valuable range of transferable skills which positions them for eventual careers in publishing management.

The links with the industry begin early during the course with the Visiting Industry Speaker lectures. The course is actively involved with large corporations and small independent publishing houses and with magazine and publications units, including the public and voluntary organisational sectors. These links are strengthened through placements when students engage with the real world of publishing professional practice.

Book Industry Forum

The MA Publishing (Book and Journal) pathway is proud to have what many consider to be the most impressive Industry Forum of any MA publishing course in the UK. We are supported by a range of international publishers operating in different sectors of the publishing industry. All members are Directors of the companies, including eight managing directors.

The function of the Book Industry Forum is to advise and support the book publishing pathway and to deepen links between the course and the companies on the Forum. The students benefit from this connection in many ways, including company visits, visiting speakers and placements.

The companies on our Book Industry Forum are (in alphabetical order) Bloomsbury, Cambridge University Press, Colman Getty, Electronic Publishing Services (EPS), Faber & Faber, Hodder Education, Jessica Kingsley Publications, Macmillan, Penguin Books, Pearson Education, Publishing News, Random House, Rightscom, Sage Publications, and Thames & Hudson.

The Society of Young Publishers, the leading campaigning organisation for young publishers of the publishing industry, is also represented on the Book Industry Forum.

Magazine Industry Forum

As our college location is within two kilometres of the West End the MA Publishing (Magazine) pathway has convenient access to a dedicated panel of leading magazine publishers and industry professionals. Forum members meet to support the teaching course teams and students for both our undergraduate and masters magazine publishing courses.

The Forum offers encouragement, industry relevance to the curriculum, and help and advice on fast changing industry developments, including migration issues to the Web and information and academic exchanges on magazines. Our partners operate across all of the main sectors of the magazine industry, from consumer fashion and lifestyle to customer and contract magazines, to business-to-business periodicals, and to small independent publishers. Our course and students gain enormously from these partnerships through connections for placements, visits and visiting industry speakers.

Representatives on our Magazine Industry Forum are from the following companies (in alphabetical order): Baseline Magazine, Conde Nast's GQ MagazineExact Editionsi-D MagazineIPC Media, Hello! Magazine, The National Magazine Company, Reed Business, Tank Magazine and other independent magazine and online publishers.

We are also fortunate that The Periodicals Training Council, the professional development division of the PPA, is also a member.
