Master's in Publishing at the University of the Arts London

Our staff on the MA Publishing course have a very broad range of experience and first-hand knowledge of the publishing industry in everything from editorial and production to marketing, sales and distribution. They lecture internationally, edit and write books and magazine articles, and are at the forefront of current and developing publishing technologies.

We also have a number of visiting professors and industry speakers who bring valuable specialist industry insight to the course.

Desmond O'Rourke - Course Director, and Magazine pathway

Des ORourke

Desmond O’Rourke is the Course Director of the MA Publishing course. He also leads the MA Publishing (Magazine) pathway. His publishing experience has been in the corporate sector primarily with design catalogues and books and customer magazines when in senior sales and marketing positions. He is a Chartered Marketer and 15 years ago he went back to university to qualify as a teacher. He also completed a masters in marketing, with a focus on marketing research and business relationship marketing.   

His research interests cover diversity in publishing employment, art books, graphic novels, book and magazine business, new creative businesses, and new digital publishing business models. He developed a partnership with the Arts Council England to extend diversity in publishing employment, and initiated Blurb Magazine and the annual Publishing Innovation conference, with sponsorship by Macmillan Publishers.

He teaches marketing on the book pathway  and the magazine pathway and integrative publishing practices on the magazine pathway, including publishing and project management and research methods in Phase 2. He also participates on the enterprise planning elective and mentors for the Centre for Creative Business at the London Business School and Treasurer of UK APE, the national university organisation for publishing education. He also co-ordinates the Visiting Industry Speakers and placements for the magazine pathway.

Professor Gill Davies - Course Director, MA Publishing (Book and Journal)

Gill Davies

Gill Davies is the Course Director for the MA Publishing (Book and Journal) pathway. She is arguably the most experienced publisher now working in publishing education, both in the UK and internationally, and brings an unrivalled depth to teaching students to prepare for publishing. Over a period of 26 years, her career ranged from starting out as an editorial secretary to becoming the managing director of three publishing houses. It included working in New York publishing, and being elected by the UK publishing industry to represent academic publishing at the highest levels, including governmental.

Her book Book Commissioning and Acquisition is acknowledged to be the leading text on the work of the commissioning editor. The eight published translations have led to invitations to speak to publishing audiences around the world, including China, Russia and Mexico. Professor Davies is also frequently invited to give training presentations to publishers.

Professor Davies teaches the following modules: Content Creation for Books, Integrative Publishing Structures, Publishing Management. She organises Visiting Industry Speakers and placements for the Book Pathway.

Dr David Penfold - Deputy Course Director

David Penfold

David Penfold teaches digital media within the course and strategic electronic publishing technology change and project management within the Publishing Management unit. Originally a physicist, David was a technical editor on academic journals until the mid 1980s. He then ran a small typesetting company carrying out early setting from disk and databases (including the Revised English Bible).

Since 1989 he has been a consultant, editor and writer. He was the project manager in 1993 for Electronic Journals on SuperJANET and has advised and carried out projects for many leading publishers and other organisations. He is the author of a large number of articles and several books. He was Chair of the British Computer Society Electronic Publishing Specialist Group until 2006 and one of the founder members of the KIDMM group. He was also a member of the Publishing Training Centre Steering Group on the recently published Electronic Publishing Occupational Standards.

David also leads various Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects for the Faculty of Media with publishing and media companies.

Simon Das, Senior Lecturer

Simon Das

Simon Das teaches editorial, marketing and publishing management for consumer, customer and business-to-business magazine publishing. With some fourteen years magazine publishing experience in both editorial (i-D, Arena, Mixmag, The Fader NY), newspaper journalism (The Guardian, el Pais in Madrid) and in business (contract publishing, marketing and corporate comms), Simon went on to edit and manage the music title, Touch Magazine, as editor-in-chief from 2002 - 2006.

A London Metropolitan University Business School graduate, a full member of Chartered Institute of Marketing with a post-graduate teaching qualification, Simon was Publishing & Editorial Advisor for the MA in Publishing's Blurb '07 (issue 4) and is currently Year 2 leader for the BA in Magazine Publishing. His developing research interests include both his subject area in magazine publishing and education and creativity, while a Master's candidate at the Institute of Education (University of London).

One of many staff members at LCC who continue to practice within industry, Simon has provided consultancy for the DCMS , Dv8 Training's Media Diploma and continues to write articles and provide training within the consumer and b2b magazine publishing sectors.

Keith Martin, Senior Lecturer

Keith Martin

Keith Martin teaches students how a critical understanding of design can contribute to outstanding publishing products across books, magazines and digital platforms. He also contributes to the BA Magazine Publishing course and others at LCC. As an experienced print and digital graphic designer, writer and programmer, his areas of expertise benefits students enormously.

He has worked in the print media production sector since the mid-1980s and print design since the late 1980s, developed multimedia and online projects since the beginning of the 1990s, and has worked in the magazine editorial sector since 1994. Concurrent with his role within the course, Keith is MacUser magazine's Technical Editor.

He works at the edge of design and production for cross-platform and new media content and is a regular guest and invited speaker at new media conferences around the world. Keith has written a wide range of magazine articles and books covering design and production for print and digital media. His books include The Digital Designer's Bible (co-authored), Web Colour: Start Here, Creative Suite 3 Integration, InDesign Essentials (co-authored), the Haynes Mac Manual, Go Digital, and others. His latest book project is 1000 Fonts, published in the UK by Ilex Press and in the US by Chronicle Books.

Lorraine Mallon, BA Magazine Publishing Course Director

Lorraine Mallon

Rick Cordell, Associate Lecturer

Rick Cordell is  a freelance photographer, specialising in portrait photography and working extensively in the corporate and editorial fields as well as personal commissions. He is also a qualified teacher and an Associate Lecturer at the LCC, University of the Arts London.

He teaches Digital Photography, Photoshop and Desk Top Publishing, covering print, design and production. He works with MA Publishing students as part of the Design and Production modules, and he also teaches on the BA Magazine Publishing, Digital Media Production and other courses.
